We had a lovely weekend, full of simple pleasures.... flea markets, horses, lunch out with daddy and music.  I often, by choice, find myself a bystander.... observing and relishing in my children.  Just watching them brings me happiness.   Even though our life is full of uncertainties right now there is one thing that remains firm and solid.  Christ.  I have been re reading My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers.  You can find it free online at www.myutmost.org , but I guess I am old fashion, liking the feel of  paper and ink on my fingers.   Oswald Chambers had such spiritual insight and anything written by him is a treasure to read.  As I woke early this morning while the house was still in slumber, I settled in a chair outside by our creek with Mr. Chambers and The Word in my hand ( along with a sweet cup of coffee ;)  The air was still and the sound of the rushing waters along with God's word soothed my very weary soul.  Such peace came over me.... I wish I could share it with you and hope you will search and ask for it.  It is there waiting.

When the darkness of dismay comes, endure until it is over, because out of it will come that following of Jesus which is an unspeakable joy. O.C.

Piano ~ Music

Being musicians we hold a great attachment and appreciation for good music as it is  daily a part of our lives.   Coming from a family of musicians and having a mother that was/is a  pianist  I am especially drawn to piano composers.   I get so many emails asking about the music....             So, I would like to share another piano composer (besides my mommy ;) I love.   His name is Yiruma, and you are listening to his delicious music right now.    The delicate caress of Yiruma's fingers on the keys  bring out emotions of the heart that are endearing to the soul.   Thirty year old Yiruma, from South Korea, was raised in England and began playing when he was 5 years old.   In one article he told the reporter  “I’m Christian, and I am not a New-age artist. Most people misunderstand me.”   All I know is that his music just may be a taste of  heaven here on earth.  

 I have several pianist I really enjoy  listening  to regularly.   Yiruma,  David Nevue (whom I have written about here)  and Makoto Ozone   being two of them.

From my mother's womb, music has always been a part of my everyday life.   Daily she filled our home and many other places with the pleasant sounds of  her fingers brushing the keys.   Now I pass that on to my children.   I only hope you are blessed by the music here.... What is your favorite music?

Bunnies, Babies & Blessings

I don't know about you, but May is always an extremely busy month for us.   This May has been particularly full of burdens and blessings.  But, I would rather share the blessings. ;)   God can take care of my burdens.   His burdens are light  Matthew 11:30. Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved  Psalm 55:22.  Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. 1 Peter 5:7     Funny, but at times I think we can actually develop  a habit of holding on to our burdens, clinging to them, allowing them to drag us down,  when we should be slinging them on the Lord.   He is able to take them on without  our help.There are so many blessings that surround us if we just open our eyes to see and humble our hearts to appreciate. 

So for today, I am casting my blessings upon you.... to show what joy the Lord does bring.

Motherhood

There is no joy greater in life than being a mother.   Motherhood awards us a most valuable purpose and as humans we need a purpose.    Motherhood gifts us with  treasures worth more than all the money this world can offer.   The stress and struggles of mothering as well as the joys often go unseen.   But the dedication and commission (or lack of) of a mother becomes obvious through her offspring as they mature. 

This weekend delivered me a  special Mother's gift as all my babies were under my roof once more to see Jack graduate from ASU with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice.  Next year he will go off to law school and yet another of my brood will leave the nest.   As I awoke this chilly spring morning a smile played across my face as I peeked in at each of my children still asleep... all of them... under my roof.  Bliss for this mother.   But good things come to an end and I bade farewell to two of my offspring as they returned to their homes.    

If you are not a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ , you may not wish to continue with this next section as it is not politically correct by the worlds standards.  Born again believers see with different eyes and hear with different ears and these  next thoughts are  ramblings of my heart to other Christian mothers....

Such ponderings  fills my mind this afternoon as I reflect on this memorable weekend, deep thought clouds my soul as I consider Jack's  graduation ceremony.  It is with humble honesty that I admit  disappointment by the absence of any prayer or mention of God.   Prayer  was a given years ago but, no more.  Darwin won his place in the commencement speech, but not once was our Lord mentioned.  I can not help but wonder of the Lord's sadness.    But, what do we expect  when we send our children to godless institutions?  I realize there are many prized Christian professors in universities and colleges for young men and women to emulate, and I applaud them.  I also realize the limited resources for continuing a Christian education in many areas ( such as ours).   I can not in good conscience however, as a believer, encourage my children any longer in this direction.   This is our personal family decision and I know many of you are a continuing source of light to some young men and women forging ahead in pursuit of knowledge but , my heart cautions me now.   I also understand the need for many to mission themselves in this arena but again, my heart cautions me.   In the realm of higher education we will be making different choices for our daughters.  Our recent graduate has stayed the course but has not been unscathed by the influence of godless professors.  Little tidbits here and there can pull some young men from truth.   My eyes may dim with age but my heart become clearer.   Do you remember your parents and grandparents saying  "Things sure have changed from when I was young." ?   Now we are saying it and it is true but in a different way.  We have grown away from our purpose and goal of serving Christ first in our lives... in raising godly children for His glory.  We are spoiled, demanding citizens who grow in  knowledge but decrease in wisdom.  We depend on man not God.  Sometimes it takes a little nudge to get us going in the right direction again.   I have thus been nudged.   So as for me and my house, we will strive to serve the Lord and be better stewards of this gift called life.   I will go against the grain  teaching my daughters to be godly mothers and helpmeet's, cultivating them in the ways of home to better serve the Master.   We may live in this world but are not to be of it.  Dear Mothers, give great thought of the exposure of worldly things to those little sponges you have been gifted.  Plant good seeds and give them plenty of water, sun and attention taking care they don't wilt.   Give them your best even when you wear down.  Teach them about God morning, noon and night.  Talk of  Jesus  much and of  worldly things  little. 

So, I humbly leave you with this note.  Treasure, treasure your children.  Mother them, enjoy them, correct them, train them to be productive and teach them to be servants and raise them to love and admonish the Lord.

Spring has sprung!

I do believe spring has finally decided to grace us here in the mountains.  Spring, where nature comes alive after her long rest giving us a perennial supply of delicious inspiration.   As I sit here a hummingbird has alighted the colorful feeder outside our window.  Come little bird! Come! Thousands of yellow wild flowers and dashes of purple buds cover the fields inviting us to romp and play!  How can we say no?  So we  run outside, a gentle breeze upon our skin, bask in the suns glow and abide in this flowery wonderland 'till we are so tired we fall down into a pleasingly deep rest then awaken  refreshed and rejuvenated.  We can't wait to get our garden started!  I hope you all are enjoying ths divine weather as much as we are.

Taste and see that the Lord is good!  (Psalm 34:8)

Little Heaven...

Daddy's Gotcha

At 3:00 today ( around 3:00 in the morning US time)  Willow's crib/orphanage  mate Xiao Tian ~ Little Heaven was finally.... finally placed in her parents arms.  Mother Teresa  said she is very, very sad and  grieving so.  For those of you who have not adopted a child, this adjustment period can be very difficult for both  child and parents.   Sometimes a child will be  depressed while another moment they may just shut down completely showing no emotion.  Each grives in a different way.  As I sit with my Willow ~Little Flower beside me I feel so blessed.  She keeps looking at Tian Tian's pictures and saying "Tian Tian, Tian Tian"   and "Tian Tian sad" .  As I hug Willow I am engulfed with  tears....tears of  joy that her  friend will soon be home and tears of sadness for Tian Tian's  little broken heart and the grief she is enduring and has had to endure  in her wee life.   Lord God, these children are so  precious and  many mistreat them so!  

Teresa is very tired and are of course upset that Tian Tian is having such a hard time.  I know it will get better and  in a few days believe they will see the sun begin to shine as Little Heaven opens up her heart and realizes "Hey,  these people aren't bad, they want to hold me and give me tons of attention"  I hope she decides to keep them ;), they are great parents!  I can not wait to hold her myself and reunite her and Little Flower Willow.

The Joys of Home....

How I wish I could say I was such a mother!   How fortunate to have new mercies bestowed upon me each day.  How often than not I find myself short on patience and godly manner, subjecting my children to displays of agitation and unease.   A disposition of equanimity is a necessity for  mothers....  the Lord   frequently  convicts me to improve my composure in my walk of the blessed role of motherhood.

The first songs of spring have alighted here in the mountains setting out her promises of renewal and rebirth.... a balm to my soul.   We played outdoors for a short period on Easter Sunday and found our first flower of spring.... a tiny yellow marigold standing alone defying the cold weather.  Funny how excited we all were rushing over to see this little fellow.... our spring inspiration.  The birds have yet to take the challenge knowing it is safer to wait until May.  I say come little birds!  Hurry hurry!  Most of you are probably already enjoying this seasons gifts of color and warmer temperatures but spring comes in slowly up here.... so as the cold abides outdoors, I sit inside by the warm fire and wait as a bride anxiously waits for her groom.

The girls are getting over pneumonia, flu and the stomach bug.  Our house has been black listed as we have sequestered the girls snuggling them down in the bed, on the sofa or  wing backed chair to rest and recover.   A simple celebration of our risen savior at home and a short outdoor adventure kept this Easter simple and sweet. 

This season is a time of reflection for me... a time of waiting and watching... learning and growing.   The Joys of Home abound as do the challenges.   As illness allows we do something fun in the kitchen, play a board game, paint a pony, sew new frocks and skirts, unclutter a closet, read the Word, play music, pray and rest.    A free range turkey is in the oven cooking, the littles have their bunnies out for a romp while they look through books.  Later we will continue work on our insect study.  We hope for a short trip to Black Mountain next week.... a  respite from staying still for so long.   I hope you enjoy the photos of the girls as they help me bake this week.   I always give them a bowl of their own when I am cooking so they can create something for daddy when he comes home. ;)

A little baby girl was untied with her new family Easter Sunday.... we had spoken with them about adoption over 3 years ago.  It took exactly 3 years for them to be matched.  whew....She was worth the wait. ;)

And wait!  More glorious news! Willow's crib mate Tian Tian is coming home!!  Her parents called me from the airport this morning and said their plane leaves at 10:10.... get it?? Ten Ten - Tian Tian?  lol.  They will be united with her Sunday.  I can not wait until they come home!!  for those friends and family of Teresa and Jimmy, i will be posting updates and photos so check back!

Outside my window I feel the warmth of the suns rays welcoming in spring...

I am thinking of our Lord who was nailed to the cross for no sin...

I am thankful for cool morning breezes and evenings by an outside open fire with my children gathered 'round me...

From the learning rooms ~ Chicks and Bunnies for my three little treasures and Texts and Translations for mama.
From the kitchen I am assaulted with aromas of deliciously fresh baked bread and colorful eggs from Easter and hot brewed coffee ground this morning...ahh

I am wearing my most comfortable choring skirt, a sweat shirt for the morning is a bit chilly and my hair gathered up and falling down my back...

I am creating memories of the joys of home to be treasured for many years

I am going to make a new commitment to spend more one on one time with each of my children at home to make them feel special

I am reading the book of Matthew out loud to my girls
 
I am hoping to get our master bedroom closet entirely cleaned out, painted then reorganized.   

I am hearing the humming of a little Willow as she soothingly sings to the bunnies, the sound of running water and clanging of dishes being washed, the sound of my sons shoes as he walks out the door...

One of my favorite things is cuddling, reading with my babies after their bath.... I love the wee little fist babies make as they fall asleep... it doesn't get any better than this

Jack ~ 18 months

Four Score and 4 years ago I gave birth to a chubby little boy with jet black hair...... he was the ugliest little baby you have ever seen. ;)  But, he was mine and I loved him. That  fat ugly duckling has grown up to be very handsome, talented man indeed.  Jack is an old soul who loves the Lord.   He is one people gravitate towards.   In May he will graduate with a BS in Criminal Justice and then is off to law school.   I love and adore you my baby boy and am so proud of  you. You are a sturdy rock in my life.  Be the best you can be for Christ.   May the Lord continue to bless you and protect you using your gifts to help his people.

Seven years ago.... I felt the brush of angels wings as a frightened ruddy cheeked  11 month old baby was placed in my arms.  This was one of the happiest moments of my life and I still remember it vividly replaying it over and over in my mind as to keep it fresh.  When she was handed to me I felt like I had just been given an extra gift I did not deserve.   I had prayed for a little girl for many years and the Lord granted me what I asked of Him. ( 1 Samuel 1:27).    Happy gotcha Day and Happy Birthday Sage... you are my dream come true.

Little Sage has a hurting heart since the loss of  her beloved cat ,Stripey.  Stripey had renal failure and  had to be put  to sleep.  Her first lesson in death to something close was a difficult one and she cried many tears as she cuddled up next to me in the bed all night long sobbing her heart out.  So did I....  I let her know I was right there with her precious kitty 'till the end.  I didn't think it would be good for her to watch.   She has taken some comfort in her Velveteen rabbit Velveteen.  Such a beautiful child she is.... pure inner beauty.

Willow ~ Liu Xiao Hua

A year has passed since  a tiny sick 18 month old little girl was handed  into my arms by one of the orphanage office workers.   I didn't have my family with me to share this great joy, as I traveled alone.  It was a quiet relinquishment as she became mine forever.  Forever.... such a beautiful word.  I was filled with indescribable wonder.  How am I so deserving of such gifts?!  I took my little treasure back to the hotel to look over. (those who have been there know what I mean) It is like unwrapping a fine treasure... gazing with love into the face of a new child.  Yes, I delighted in counting each little piggy and brushing every fine hair, placing soft kisses upon her wee runny nosed face, and gazing into her eyes.  Oh! Children are truly gifts for the Lord! Willow is such a carefree happy little sprite.  She has such a whimsical spirit and enjoys taunting her sisters as well as making them laugh.  I wish I could share her walk with you...no, her actual physical walk.  She plods along with a bit of a stomp as she walks.  And her run?  Her little feet kick out as she runs.  I think she puts everything she has into what she does... weather putting stickers on every kitten in a litter, pouring rice on her sister or saying "I luuu ew!" ( translation: I love you) she is an amazing child.  To me, she is perfection.

Willow had her dental surgery two weeks ago.  All went well and they were able to save her all her teeth. I sat in the hospital praying, asking the Lord to be with my precious gift and guide the hands of those trusted to her care.  She is still in pain and we are praying she will begin to eat something substantial soon.   Isn't it hard when your child is ill and you want to take the pain and sorrow away but can't?   Oh how I wish I could carry it for her.  She snuggled against me last night in bed as she always does to read and sing.  When she quietly fell asleep I prayed over her beseeching the Lord to grant her the gift of healing and wake up to a painless morning.  How I love my babies.  Motherhood fills you with such an array of emotions ~ immense joy, fear, laughter, peace, anxiousness, unconditional boundless love, sleepless nights, an appreciation for rest, thoughtfulness, nesting, hope, grace, unbelievable forgiveness, wisdom, patience, weariness, but most of all love unlike any other mankind can ever experience.

As you can imagine, this is a busy (and blessed!) month for us which can put a strain on life.  There are many things on my heart... some which are heavy.  It is times like this I  need to remind myself to seek the Lord first... he will  provide us  everything else.  He will carry my burdens if I let him.  (Matthew 11:28)  I am waiting to let everyone know where we will be moving.... it is a surprise. ;)

Little Flower, Little Pearl & Little Heaven

March, the beginning of spring!  But wait,  what... is that... fiercely falling outside my window?  Something  feathery and  powdery.... a  blizzard.

I admit it.  I want spring.  Here.  Now.  As I sit  typing we are having a snowy down pour, flakes as fat as marshmallows I mean to tell ya.  OK , maybe not quite that big, but colossal, and alot of them joined by noisy squalls.   It's a blustery day!   Thank goodness I didn't purchase that "Spring Gardens" magazine the at the store as I may have used it as a fire starter. ;)  We have had several nice days here lately and I am grateful.  I like to call the photo above Pouty and Poutier. ;o)  just kidding.  The kids in the photo where not pouting but just in deep thought and conversation on solving the worlds problems.  I love this photo.

Come with me back to October, to a warmer time when the trees where showing off their colorful finery.  We had an enjoyable visit with Little Pearl who came home in September.  She and her family also live in these spectacular mountains, but a bit down from us.  Her parents are also professional animal photographers and their home is something out of a spring garden magazine.  Bane has made sure their acreage is a studio and has succeeded in grand style.  This little haven boasts antique wagons, little garden spots, winding streams, whimsical bridges, docks and alluring flower beds set in various spots around their place....a sanctuary for the eye and mind.   I am always amazed at them and can't help but say "Wow, Mountain Man, look at what Bane has done now. "  ;}  I think women are born manipulators.  I personally, feel I am quite gifted in this area which  is something I am constantly working to curtail.  Ok, back to Little Pearls breathtaking  abode.  Little Pearl is now called Charis (Care-es) which means grace.  She is only a few days older than Willow and are both from Xiamen Island.  I remember calling her parents and asking if they had considered adopting again as there were two gorgeous little baby girls where Willow was waiting  for us.  Charis is a prefect fit for their family.  Lyndsay, her older sister, is rightfully protective of her and kept great watch to make sure she was there to help her up when she took a fall.  Lyndsay is a striking child... her features perfect symmetry.  She is extremely bright and seemed to gravitate toward Sage who is older.  I have noticed this in intelligent children....

I got to see Charis in the doctors office last week and was amazed at her progress.  She was an unsteady walker when she came home and now is jumping around.  I am so happy for her.   But what about Little Heaven??   Her parents have been so distraught, trying so hard to bring her home.  Oh my hearts aches for them as it has been over a year since they applied to adopt her.    Their agency, unfortunately, caused them many delays.  Fortunately however, they are now awaiting their TA ( travel approval) to bring Little Heaven, Willow's best buddy in the orphanage, home.  They have decided to call her Shai ~ pronounced Shay.  I can not wait to see her.  We will have Willow~Little Flower , Charis~ Little Pearl and Shai~ Little Heaven in the same little village.  Be looking for her story coming up hopefully the end of this month!

One of the many props at Close Encounters of the Furry Kind.  I know they are launching a new large scale web site soon.

I want to say to all of you while I am posting how much I appreciate you extremely kind emails and comments    Such flattery!  I am so humbled.  To quickly answer some of your questions:  I shoot with Nikon's and several lenses.  No, I have never had any classes or special training but I would sure enjoy taking one.    Yes, I shoot professionally and did also many moons ago before the digital age.  Digital is amazing and anyone can take great photos.  Photograph what you love and photograph often.   I enjoy shooting old barns , log houses and wood.  I also love photographing children... they are so innocently beautiful and inspiring.  I would love to write Little Cabin books, and had started to before, but truthfully don't feel there would be a market for that genre.   Little Cabin in the Woods  is a child's finger play which I will share in another post.   My grandmother taught my mother, my mother sang it to me when I was little and I passed it on to my children.  That is where the name came from.... and yes , we do have a simple little cabin in the woods. :o)

From the Mouths of Babes...

Each week or so I carry off one of my children  for some Mama and Me time.  This week it was Mama and Sage.  We went to the grocery store, but even something as simple as this can be a special adventure when you have several children ;0).   We were taking our time strolling around the store in an unstressed manner.    When you have only one child you can do this and it is quite enjoyable.   We gazed upon the fresh fruit section talking about the  grapes produced in Chili and cantaloupes that were still partly frozen.  We then sauntered over to the deli and ordered us up a corn dog ~ special stuff  for a special time...I am tellin' you.  Meandering over toward the dairy aisle my little Miss paused and said -- a bit loudly I might add --" Mom?  Have  you ever been in jail?"   There was a kind middle aged gentleman shopping next to us at that particular moment... of course.  His stiffened and his eyes grew large... I do believe he held his breathe in wait for the answer.  I was tempted to say "Yes, honey but they released me last week"  but thought better of it.  "Thou shalt not lie" came to mind so I simply told the truth "Nope, can't say I have"  I heard the man give a sigh of relief as he walked away.   Smiling and chuckling he said "From the mouths of babes..."

The Quilt Shop, a lovely small open spaced  boutique  I enjoy occasioning,  offers a  ample selection of quality hand selected  fabrics so we decided to visit, drool over  the lovely fabrics and treat ourselves to a fat quarter.  The owner greeted me and we got to chatting  when we heard the sound of my little Miss clapping her hands in great excitement exclaiming  'Oh mama!  We can get a free puppy!!"  Casting my furrowed brow in her direction I moved my eye to inspect the sign she had been reading.  The owner and staff started laughing as I read  "Children left unattended will be given a cappuccino and a puppy"  I smirked.... I grinned,  then told her "I'll take hazelnut in my cappuccino"    ;)..... From the mouths of babes.  

Life is good.

Willow went to the dentist.  She did beautifully and I was so proud of her.  She is only two you know and has already been through so much in her wee little life.  Sadly, everyone of her teeth, with the exception of three on the front bottom are seriously decayed..... rotten.   She will need to go to the hospital to have all the work  completed which will include pulp therapies, nerve therapies and crowns on all her teeth....  Stainless steel in the back and white composite in the front.  When Mountain Man was working we had good dental insurance.  We do not however ,have this available to us any longer.  The dental work will be somewhere in the range of 12,000.00.  it might as well be a billion right now. lol  But,I have peace about it.  The Lord has never let me down.... even when I have let Him down.    I got a call this morning that it will all be covered.  I praise the Lord.  He is good.  He is amazingly good to the humble and we have been humbled.   Humbled by circumstance and humbled by His gifts and care.   Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 1 Peter 5:6

Zero

This is our world  at  zero.   Crisp, clean air that  bites your nose and tingles your lungs.  I went for a walk with the eldest of my three treasures on this frigid evening before dusk.  The air was considerably still and not a sound could be heard ~ well except for a little ones howling.  I set out by myself early the next morning to capture the cold on film (or rather camera).  Walking in the clouds among the deer ( Lynn they are still here although their fawns are grown now).....I gasp at God's wonder and  the magnificence of the world he created.  So inspired I was.... I had to stop to ponder and pray ~ thanking him for such glorious gifts!  Have you ever gazed on something so arresting, so magnificent you just stood in wonder?  I feel God at these moments.  Livng abroad and traveling around the world, I have seen many wonders.  From the leaning tower of Pisa, castles in Europe, the Eiffel tower, the Grand Canyon, the Great Wall of China to the Lippazan stallions in Vienna.... but nothing compares to my family, my precious children.  Oh, what a favor they are!   Children are  gifts, a reward from the Lord ( Psalm 127:3).   So as I sit in zero weather reflecting on God's goodness and forgiveness as he fills me with rewards so cherished.  Not worldly rewards, but heavenly.

We have been, appropriately, reading "The Long Winter" , sympathizing with many of their plights, discussing how easy we have it today.    We sit this morning coloring and creating by candle light.  Later we snuggle up to read by the fireplace comfy in well fluffed chairs, and covered with quilts.   The sewing machine has been running this week ~ a dress made , a quilt finished.  Victuals of beef stew, potato soup, corn bread and biscuits have been the fare.  Math has been drilled, copy work copied, and history along with biblical review have been studied and discussed. How wonderful it is to sit and chat with you child about the world.  Willow has  positively developed a loving relationship with Beatrix Potter stories in their wee versions.  In the evening we burrow  underneath quilts and feather beds to read "The Golden Thread and other Stories".  Life is lovely and cherished.

Mountain man is outside under the house this Arctic morning, as most of our Appalachian neighbors are, unfreezing lines.   They don't usually freeze but the temperature has dropped so low this week that even rentals are shut down on this popular ski weekend.   He came rushing in the house early this morning gasping and dripping with icy water.   A gauge blew and when it did he got spiked with pure  deep well mountain water.   Now if you've ever felt water up here you know how painful it can be as it is stinging cold.... like needles.  It will make a grown man cry.  Poor fella... sure glad it wasn't me ;)

Being an early riser, Sage woke with me before dawn this frigid morning.  I went to the kitchen to wash up some dishes from the night before and she snuggled in a wing back chair with blue blankie.  Being the creative soul she is, a meowing of song burst forth form her lungs.  It was quite loud but being the mother of six I am considerably trained at phasing out many noises and sounds. ;)  She continued her ballad for a spell and I decided to accompany her with a duet in her feline number.   I seemed to forget that Jack, who is interning late hours, was sleeping in the next room.... Soon his door was jerked open and a groggy voice said  "Sage, sweetheart, what in the world are you doing?"  Sage  with a smile of whimsy:  "I'm singing cat opera!"   Jack looks at me as I turn away so as not to let him see my grin and chuckle.   Poor fella.... sure glad it wasn't me ;)

New Beginnings...

2008 was a year of immense change for our family.  We welcomed our newest little one into our hearts and lives.  She has truly been the most magnificent gift of the year.  We also put our house on the market and Mountain Man lost his job.  I will admit, it has been difficult emotionally for us.  I have had some considerably trying days.  But through it all.... one thing remains steady...  My Lord.   When I falter, He never changes.  When I despair, His word is steadfast.  When I fail, His promises continue and prevail.  When all else is unstable and I lose promise, He provides me with a constant hope and light.     His love never ceases.  His love endures forever.

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good.   His love endures forever.

When you live in a place that is so breathtaking, just stepping outside can be inspiring.  Watching the snow fall this morning as the sun gently rises over the mountains fills me with rejuvenation.   My sweet treasures trodding downstairs one at a time as they awaken, all misty eyed, gives me immense joy.  The deer, out since day break forging for acorns fills my eyes with childlike wonder.  The doe I see every evening  crossing through our wood lets me know me she is still around alive and well.   Friends both near and far bring me comfort and my family accords me strength and hope.  Sitting in our bedroom at night watching the  snowfall and peering at the lights from Sugar Mountain.... so comforting... a light in the darkness.  A live nativity swells my heart to overflowing with thankfulness.  The Word of my heavenly Father which brings me peace and hope.  All these are inspiration to this heart.

Mountain Man has had a couple of offers, but we are not yet sure which path we will take.  We are waiting, praying and resting in Him.  There is no need to hurry when He is keeping us.  We know He has plans for us.  (Jer. 29:11).    I can not tell you how comforting your emails and comments have been...I am grateful for your thoughts and prayers.  Please know we are doing fine, resting  and waiting on Him!  We have had some interest in the Little Cabin and pray the future owner will enjoy it as much as we have.  It is also being shown again today ~ the third time this week.  We put a lot of heart into this home to create a place where one can come to find rest and feel peace.  Our children have had many adventures in the woods and playing in our stream discovering wonderful treasures. ;)  We feel quite lucky to have lived here and it will be hard to leave.  But seeing it go to family who will enjoy it will make it easier.

Thanksgiving  took us to a breathtaking estate of yesteryear decorated to overflowing with seasonal delights.  We supped on savory roasted duck, tender farm raised beef and a scrumptious squash bisque.  Oh my, it was delicious.   Our travels  then took us down south...to a place winter has passed by, where the girls enjoyed running in the green grass, searching for pine cones and taking walks with their Mimi.   We always look forward to returning home however, to our Little Cabin in the Woods.... a true inspiration to our heart and soul.

We ventured out this blustery, snowy day  in search for the perfect Christmas tree.  You won't see tree lots here as the Christmas tree farms are in abundance everywhere you go... just choose and cut !    We take pleasure in  letting the girls pick out that special tree of the year for our family.  It is not usually the one we would choose ;), but they delight in making this grand decision.   This is Willow's first Christmas and I could see the questionable look on her face as we ooh'd, ahh'd and pointed while her sisters shook their shot off ,dashing in and out of the trees in a game of hide and seek... what an inspiration to watch them in this dance of life.  We then loaded up our tree taking it home where we decorated it quite simply... Jesus was laid in a simple manger in a stable.   On the way home we made our regular stop to the General store for some goodies,  little eyes spying all sorts of delicious treats and dandies.  Our days have been filled with music and secrets.... shhhhh

The girls and I received a delightful surprise in the mail from a sweet friend who lovingly knitted  socks and head covers for each of the girls!  How their little eyes shone when they opened the box and discovered these unexpected gifts.  There was even a lovely blue and white hat and scarf for me inside!  Clara, you are full of sweetness and inspire me so.

I hope your heart has been filled seeing our journey this past month.  It has been an inspiring season this year.... one of surprises and joy.    How blessed we are to have the freedom to serve our Lord but remembering His most precious gift ~ Jesus.  Our family is reading the historic story of Chrsitmas from the  book of Luke as we do each season.  I hope to fully concentrate on Him as He truly is  my complete inspiration in life.         

P.S.  Willow has the chicken pox... when it rains it pours... such is life. lol

Peace...

As the snow covers the ground the Lord covers my life with purity and peace.  I love the snow.  Maybe because the air is so crisp and still... so peaceful.  It makes one calm and the light it brings is energizing on short winter days.  I wonder what the crime rate is in towns where it snows often.  I just can't imagine it being high.  Who could commit a crime while it is so soft, white and peaceful -- and cold?   I do know it is very low up here!  Last night we were sitting near the window watching the wildlife out in abundance searching for food.  They come out in full force right before a big snow so we knew one was coming.  I had a urge to bake bread and Mountain Man had the urge to go hunting. ;o)

Mountain Man just appeared from up stairs with our littlest treasure snuggled securely in his masculine  arms with eyes misted over from sleep.  Her wee baby voice brings me joy and as I say "Good Morning sweetie"  her little sleepy grin fills my heart  near to bursting.  I can't resist covering her with kisses.  The falling snow, the warm fire, fresh baked bread of yesterday and a treasure in my arms tells me today is a day of blessings.  I sat near the fire's warmth with Willow on my lap reading.  Her book choice- Little Bunny Goes Potty.    My book choice:  "Home Town Tales" by Philip Gulley.  If you have never read one his books you have missed a treat for sure!  Philip Gulley is a small town Quaker minister with an absolutely  delightful sense of humor.  And honest to goodness his storytelling lifts my spirits.  When I am finished with this one I just may have a give away of one of his books to pass this joy. 

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.   Philip. 4:7 

It has been a week of surprises for us.  Mountain Man was laid off and our little cabin in the woods is on the market.  Many ask us why we are not worried or upset.  We know this is just a season of change, one that the Lord has bestowed on us.  Our family is safe and healthy. What more could we ask for.  We will move and build a new little cabin in the woods as we have done before.  Change can bring a feeling of insecurity and unrest but I know my friend and Savior is here.  He has never left me or deserted me and never will.  I can't say I will not have moments of feeling down but I know the peace He brings.  I just feel blessed.  I have His peace and am secure in His care.

 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.  John 14:27

The girls have had such fun frolicking in the snow!  Oh what joy to see these little ones happy and secure, enjoying the simple things in our lovely life.

Apples and Life

Have you ever experienced a time in your life that was full of riches and blessings?  A time when everything was going well and your worries were few?  Do you find your self in absolute contentedness and joy during these times?   God is good and you know it times?

Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions." Luke 12:15

Have you ever experienced a time of worry and fear?  A time in your life when  finances are drained and it seems everything you own is breaking?  Your relationships are strained as well as your bank account?  Do you find yourself in misery during these times, fearful of the unknown  asking "Why is this happening to me and where is God!?"  Sick to you stomach, sad.... even pouty?    Then a check comes in the mail, things get better, you "feel" lighter and all is well with the world again.....  

 For the despondent, every day brings trouble;
 for the happy heart, life is a continual feast. Proverbs 15:15

A glad heart makes a happy face; a broken heart crushes the spirit.  Proverbs 15: 13

I  personally have experienced both of these and  recently wondered why I let my emotions control my happiness?  Why should I be so worrisome and depressed by my situation?!  I  imagine God looking down on us thinking "How silly they are, don't they know the things of this world don't matter?  Don't they believe I will take care of them?"   

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you."  Hebrews 13:5

 I think the less I own the more content I am.  The more I give away the freer I feel.  I have learned to be content with less but find myself slipping at times when I become fearful.  Instead of worrying during these times,  I need to lean more on Him and chose to be happy.... and content.  

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.  Philippians 4:12

Be still in the presence of the Lord,
and wait patiently for him to act. Psalm 37:7

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.  Philippians 4:11

We have been enjoying the last days of fall weather.  Snow will be upon us this evening, one of the many firsts for Willow.  It is so lovely watching her explore her new world.  She is a feisty little thing!  Full of spice and life!   We went to one of the many local orchards and the girls picked apples right from the tree.  We were in the clouds and it was quite chilly but they had a grand experience and tested many varieties of apples.  We later strolled to the fair - a no ride fair- where we talked to artisans, ate hot grilled corn on the cob ( oh my it was delicious!), drank fresh pressed hot apple cider and watched a very funny magician.   It was a lovely, lovely time.

Jumping into Fall...

When I stepped outside this morning the cold brisk air caught my breath and I smiled.  There is nothing like fresh mountain air in the fall.  It is clean and snappy.  When it fills your lungs, a smile is forthcoming...   Fall is my favorite season.   I feel the urge to bake bread and make stew.  The down comforters, feather beds and sweaters are pulled out from their summer slumber to keep us warm and cozy.  It is chilly tonight as I write this , about 39 degrees... I want to snuggle under the covers  put on some soothing music and read!   (Just as soon as I finish the dishes, bathe the girls, mop the floor , put up the laundry and pick up. ;)

Willow's blood and urine test for her kidney's (because of the contaminated milk in China) were normal as was the  ultrasound of her kidneys and bladder!  She is a big baby now and potty trained so was able to go in a cup.   God is so good!  He has kept my precious treasure from harm.  I am so thankful to him. 

We had  a lovely weekend, enjoying -- probably the last walk  on a particularly warm day where the temperature was mild 67... our last day of short sleeves for a while.    We woke, grabbed something warm  to wrap around us and went out on the porch to read from God's Word and discuss  scripture together.  Each morning begins with Him.   Our budget has been tight so we decided to make create a snack with whatever we could find on hand.  Sage named it "Ambrosia" , an appropriate name as  it was smooth, sweet and delicious.   The girls were all pretty proud of their accomplishment and I was thankful it didn't taste awful!  Later  the girls used vegetables to make art.  They were creating some wonderful master pieces until it turned into finger painting, and then body art....lol  I enjoy their free spirit.     The moon was also still peaking out volleying for attention so I accomadated him. ;)

Appalachian Music..

The Appalachian mountains encompass some of the oldest settlements in the US; remains of which can still be seen today.  Blackened hand hewn log cabins, hand dug root cellars and small smoke houses are just a few pieces of history we see everyday up here.  Daniel Boone is just one of the many pioneer folk  heroes in these mountains.... we enjoy eating at his restaurant ;).    The Blue Ridge Parkway alone supplies an abundance of luscious scenery ~ a pure feast to the soul and eyes.  Old homesteads and log cabins dot the landscape along this vast expanse of road which was carved and blasted out of the mountains years ago.  Pioneers from this area hunted their own food , had gardens, made their clothes from wool and flax, and built their own cabins  out of  trees they themselves felled.  Life was  plain hard.  God was an integral part of their exsistence  bringing purpose and comfort to their difficult lives.   Much like the pioneers who settled here music played and instrumental part (no pun intended;) of their daily lives.   Songs were passed down from generation to generation and the music was as diverse as the people who were mostly  Scottish ( my people ;), Irish and German descent (along with the Native Americans who were the authentic people of these hills).   Some where called song catchers.  Instruments like the fiddle, mountain dulcimer ( honey I want one for Christmas - a hammered dulcimer please), psaltery, harps, pipes and gourd pianos where just some created and played by these mountain folk. 

Then David and all the house of Israel played music before the Lord on all kinds of instruments of fir wood, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on sistrums, and on cymbals.  2 Samuel 6:5

As we gathered together on this rainy overcast morning  in the mist covered mountains I could only think how much effort it took the folks in these here mountains to visit for a day.  Life was hard indeed but I wonder if they realized how hard it was.  Work and hardships were all they knew... unlike us with our luxurious comforts of the modern day.   A get together was undoubtedly a fun time for all with plenty of food, music, children, spinning, and quilting.   Dr. C  along with his wife  and two beautiful daughters graciously opened their home  to us this misty day in the Appalachian mountains.  This talented family impressed me with their talents and kindness!  Have you ever met a family you admire?    This is truly a  family to emulate.  With dancing and the sound of violins resonating through out the hills... it was a splendid time. 

You shall have a song as in the night when a holy festival is kept, And gladness of heart as when one goes with a flute, To come into the mountain of the Lord, To the Mighty One of Israel. Isaiah 30:29

Pick A Winner

It is my baby girl's  birthday this week.  She is 2 years old.  In her short little life she has endured grief and hardships as I have never known.   The Lord granted me the privilege of this wee one to love and hold.  It is my ardent hope she will have a happy life and know Him.  As I watched her blithely running in the park today, legs flying high as she trotted about giggling with glee, my heart bubbled over with joy.  I thought to myself....If  this little one brings such gaiety to my world just think  how God must  feel when He watches us at play!  How He love His children!  I pray the Lord gives Willow all she needs in life to be committed to Him.  The few months I have had her in my life she has blessed me beyond measure.... my cup runneth over .... as  does my laundry.  Pick a winner sweetheart.

Being Willow's mama I  realized is a bit different than my other girls.  She is quite the explorer and continuously discovering her world. I find myself saying the strangest things.... (Attention: No, animals have been harmed in this home or during the writing of this blog)  ;)

Little Flower, Little Pearl & Little Heaven...

It is phenomenal the means through which God sends blessings our way and how His spirit descends upon His children with urgings and encouragement s to do His will.  The little cherub  above is named Little Pearl.  Little Pearl was born in China....

Once there was a mother with two treasures from China.  She was overjoyed yet her heart  yearned  for another.  She  spent many months in prayer, anxiously waiting,  not knowing who or where her child was.  But God knew, His plans had been carefully laid out.  Across the seas to the East was a little one name Willow Little Flower.  She had been found forsaken and alone.  A few days earlier another little one named Little Pearl had also been discovered  and  two months earlier yet another little one named Little Heaven had been found.... all on Xiamen Island in China.  The three little ones were taken to the Xiamen CWI to be reared and cared for.   These three tiny treasures had no idea that their paths would one day cross and their lives would be forever linked together.  But God knew, His plans had been carefully laid out....

When I received the call for Willow Little Flower ( Liu Xiao Hua) I couldn't believe my fortune.  God had smiled upon me yet again!   A fews days after my referral a woman contacted me.  I will forever be grateful to this woman.  She is an American who lives in China and happened to know my daughter.  She told me all about her and how lovely she was.  I couldn't believe my fortune.  She told me of  a little one who she was particularly fond of and who  happened to be Little Flower's best buddy.  She told me how very close their were.  "Like two peas in a pod" she told me... always together, touching, laughing and "talking" to one another.   Her name is Little Heaven.          A  couple of weeks later in December I discovered Little Heaven  on a list to be adopted.  I couldn't believe it, but knew she must come here to be near her best buddy Willow Little Flower.  I also noticed a lovely hidden jewel  in the list.  A small baby with skin fair as silk and hair black as coal , also in the same orphanage.  Her  name was Little Pearl.  This little snow white  so beautiful and lovely  tugged at my heart.   I had to know more about her!  I reviewed all of Little Heaven's and Little Pearls'  files and began calling people in our area.  I prayed the Lord would open hearts bring these little ones to  families that would raise them to love and admonish the Lord.   I had a couple of  families in mind but knew it would take God to open their hearts and minds!  ;)  But God knew, His plans had been carefully laid out....

One  of these couples just happened to call me at this time.  Talk about timing!  I was planning on calling them and another couple about these two treasures but wasn't sure how they would take  another adoption.  I did know both of these families had big hearts.  Guess God didn't want  to wait....  I talked to them about our newest blessing and then preceded to tell them of two other  beautiful little girls and how they were with Willow on Xiamen Island in China.  I let them know everything I knew about them.  I knew others may be requesting these little ones so time  was of the essence.  :)  I also knew if I sent them  pictures they would be hooked.  (I know, it's a dirty trick but , sigh...)  Jeannie and Bane had attended an adoption seminar I gave several years before and so had one daughter from China already.   Unbeknownst to them God knew it was time for another.  ;)   Little Pearl took hold of Jeannie and Bane  and after much prayer they sent in their application and were accepted to adopt her.  Early tomorrow morning ( Tuesday the 9th) they will be on a plane to China to bring her home.... here to the High Country.  Her new name will be Charis, pronounced Karis.  When they told me this I thought hmmm.. a Greek name and  one of the graces!  (theology major :)  I am delighted for them and  can't believe I will soon meet  their Little Pearl.    She is only a few days older than Willow.  You can follow their journey at China Connection

But what about Little Heaven,  Willow's best buddy?   Well, I will tell you!  Years ago, I became good friends with a woman in our town who had seen Sage in the paper in a ad announcing an adoption seminar.  ;) Pictures are greeeeat aren't' they?  She later adopted a little girl with a special need.  When I found out about these little girls I really wanted to call her but..... she  was in the hospital with her daughter who had just had surgery.  I intended on  calling her anyways to see how they were doing sooooo decided to mention Little Heaven to her.  I knew it was bad timing, but also knew another family might request her!  What's that?  You ask if I sent them  pictures also?  Please....  Ok.  I sheepishly admit it.  sigh.   Teresa and Jimmy are deliriously happy and should be traveling in a few months to bring home Willow's best buddy.  I am so eager to meet her!!!  Is God amazing?  Is there a red thread?!  Ah.... life is good.  God is so very good!  Little Heaven is to be named Molly.  Molly!  I love, love it!   When I was in China I wanted so very badly to see these two precious little ones but Willow was too ill.  I did however, tell the orphanage director the story of these three little girls and asked if she could send me some updated pictures of them.  She sent me about six of each of them! 

So from the east to the west God has sent His gifts to three families in the same small town..... Little Flower, Little Pearl and Little Heaven.  God knew, His plans have been carefully laid out.

Tian Tian in March when I adopted Willow.... I cried thinking how she would miss her best buddy.  She reminds me of Willow. I am eager to see her and eager for them to be brought back together.

Peasant Dresses....

I looked at the date of my last post and couldn't believe it has been so long..... Willow does keep me busy! 

We have been taking morning walks, cleaning up ~ after Willow, straightening up our yard, making bread, making Amish friendship bread~ which everyone in our small town is passing around, been sick,  taking Sage to piano, shooting photos, editing photos, recording an audio book,  cleaning up after Willow, having teeth fixed,  finished  re-adopting Willow ( paperwork paperwork paperwork), schooling ( or Willow who is anti schooling - heh), visiting, reading, cleaning up after Willow, doing laundry and sewing on my new (used) serger which I absolutely love! I feel so professional now.... lol.   I found the most adorable easy peasy pattern created by a homeschool mom.  You can visit her at  The Handmade Dress.  She offers dress patterns for children & crochet patterns available.  The peasant dress I made is quick and simple.  You can make it with or without the apron.  The first one took about 2 hours while the other two were sewn in 30 minutes each.  These little dresses are simple and lovely. 

Summer is coming to a close and autumn is on it's way a bit early up here in the mountains.  Leaves are already showing their colors and the apples have fallen from the trees in abundance.   I do believe it is going to be a coooold winter.   This morning we woke to the mist moving across the mountain we live on.  I love living in the clouds.... it is so peaceful.  May the joy of our Lord bring you to a place of peace in your life today.

The Winner ~~~~~ School Days @ Home....

Speaking of homeschooling ~~~~ We have begun our "official" days of learning.  Of course everyday is a learning day at when you school at home.  Whether it's baking bread, taking a nature walk or reading a story we are always learning something.  In fact... right now Willow is learning all about taking CD ROMs out of their sleeves and putting them in to different sleeves... a matching skill .  She is sitting at my feet at this moment trying her hardest to sing her ABC's. She can sing the ABC part and then it slowly becomes just a tune of jumbled sounds with an occasional letter... lol  She can also count to 3. 

I came across this insightful blog that gives a glimpse into living in China and their culture.  I know I have learned a lot just by visiting.  It is a very informative blog with many pictures!  She also homeschools.     One Child Policy Homeschool

Blueberry Pickin'

Each year in August we go to the blueberry farm around the corner to pick organic blueberries right off the bush.   It is a fun time for the girls and I so enjoy watching them running through the fields filling their baskets full of delicious blueberries.   Fortunately for us, the owners happen to be  Jack's girlfriend's parents.  How convenient. ;)   This beautiful Christian family takes great pain in keeping their bushes in optimum health in hopes of producing a bountiful crop of luscious fruit for those in our area.   It is also a ministry for this couple as I have seen them giving their harvest away to those in need.  I know they have blessed us over the years as we bring their berries home to make blueberry jam , preserves, muffins, pancakes, pie.... we also freeze them to enjoy through the winter.    This was Willow's first adventure in pickin'.... not being sure what the little purplish -blue balls were, she decided they were for smashing in her hands  and between her fingers as well as throwing them at her sisters.  Trying to get her to pick only the ripe ones took some encouragement but she finally followed our lead.

She had been stripped from her foster home, her family and all she had ever known....She loved her daddy  , she loated me...

That first year was nothing short of a nightmare.  During the second year the clouds began parting and a bit of sunshine appeared.  pipe by you.

The third year has been a blessing beyond measure.  There are still a few wee issues we are working on, but my oh my how the Lord has provided us with an abundance of His mercy and grace.  I can honestly say now, I love, truly love this child of mine.... my one and only Piper.
